Case studies
The following project fact sheets give an overview of the Risk Assesment:
- Rion-Antirion Bridge (Greece)
The Rion-Antirion Bridge in Greece spans the Corinth Strait and links Peloponnese (southern Greece) to the Greek mainland. This Tollbridge contains the world’s longest suspended deck. Due to the complex design, cost, critical nature, and the seismic area in which the bridge was constructed, a comprehensive risk analysis was performed on the structure. As is the case in many Advitam projects, the bridge was first broken down into its structural sub-components. Parameters where established and Thirty-two possible types of Risk or Accidental loss where identified for evaluation. The probability, or occurrence interval, of each type of loss was established and a matrix was created and utilized for the purposes of recording the gravity of potential damage or loss on each structural element. When combined with the probability of occurrence it was then possible to perform a risk analysis and establish a comprehensive Monitoring, Maintenance and Inspection Manual that the concessionaire could utilize to limit risk.
- Bulgarian Road Bridges (Bulgaria)
As part of a vast initiative to upgrade the condition of Bulgaria’s 19,000 km long road network, the Road Executive Agency decided to implement a state of the art bridge management system. The Advitam system supplied met the requirements of: A) handling large volumes of data corresponding to over 1,300 bridges, B) storing the inspection and rating data of each individual structure and, C) classifying the bridges based on inspection findings e.g. health condition, urgency of repair, importance of structure. Key portions of Advitam’s scope of work consisted of adapting and importing the Agency’s existing data, inventorying the nations network of bridges, supervision of field inspections, condition assessment and preparing detailed inspection report and recommendations. A risk based condition assessment system has been defined to identify critical risks and decide best maintenance & rehabilitation program.
